Photo of the Day- 2015-06-03

Redwood1890-20150602-_DSC0530_DxOHot Mama! This snapper was found sunning along the Rose Point Trail yesterday afternoon. I estimate the shell was about 50 cm (20 inches) from back to front, with a weight that might have approached 20 kg (44 lb.) or more. I guess at that size it’s probably an old male based on the information in the Wikipedia entry. The snapping turtles will be laying eggs in the next month along and in the trail. It’s a discouraging sight as the eggs are too often dug up and consumed by raccoons, foxes and skunks. (June 2015)
