Photo of the Day – 2015-03-12

Redwood189020150311-_DSC9848_DxOThe sun sets on ice fishing in the Big Sound. That was fast. From highs of -15°C less than a week ago to highs of about +3°C since Monday the snow on the ice surface has basically disintegrated. The ice is still thick and strong but the layer of snow you see in this photo is basically a crust with about 15 cm of slush below it. There is no danger of falling through the ice but walking on the ice is like wading through a swamp with a light crust on top. This photo is from yesterday (Wednesday) and people were scurrying to get ice shacks pulled off with their sleds before they are forced to run through water. (March 2015)
