This scene was a learning opportunity, for me at least. This is a Common Fireweed (Chamerion augustifolium), a native plant easily found on the Rose Point Trail. What I discovered is that it has seed pods, the slender pinkish red pods you see here, that split open, like a milkweed, to release ‘feathered’ seeds that are then carried by the wind. (August 2014)
